Oklahoma RTC athletes Nick Heflin and Hunter Stieber competed in the Dave Schultz Memorial International tournament the past weekend at the Olympic Training Center.  The tournament honors former World, Olympic  and NCAA Champion for the Oklahoma Sooners, Dave Schultz.

The tournament was well represented by nations such as Russia, Korea, Mongolia, Japan, Kazakhstan and many others.

“The guys did good, they take their journey serious and had a good first showing.  You can’t win it, if you’re not in it.  We were here and wrestled pretty well” said Coach Guerrero

Heflin (OKRTC/ Titan Mercury) walked away with the 92kg gold medal with a finals fall in 1:35 over Tim McCall (Wolfpack RTC).

“I’m getting out there as much as I can to continually fine tune and improve my wrestling skills until it comes time to make a World Team, said Heflin.  I still have a bad taste in my mouth from last year and I'm itching to change it."

Hunter Stieber (OKRTC/ Titan Mercury) produced a solid performance with several impressive wins over Korea, Mongolia and former college rival Montell Marion of the NJRTC and ultimately finished 4th at 70kg.

“Fourth is not the tournament I wanted but good news is, I learned a lot about my wrestling and the areas I need to improve on, so it’s good to come and test ourselves” said Stieber.

Coach Guerrero felt the Dave Schultz was an important event to start the competition year.

“My feelings before the tournament are the same as after, you have to get out and compete. Whether the National Coach was Bruce, K.J., Zeke or now Bill, the message being passed down has been the same, 25+ matches to contend at the end, I don’t view that as a suggestion.”

“The training plan doesn’t alter because you win or because to happen to lose. So whether you finish 4th or 1st, it is academic to the fact that there is adjustments to be made and we return to our training plan” added Coach Guerrero

The Oklahoma Regional Training Center provides the leadership, training, coaching and opportunities necessary to help wrestlers achieve their Olympic dreams.
