3 Oklahomans Medal in Schoolboy Pan-American Championships

MEDELLIN, Colombia – The U.S. Schoolboy freestyle team took first place on day one of the UWW Schoolboy Pan-American Championships on Friday in Medellin, Colombia.

The U.S. scored 87 points, finishing 15 points ahead of No. 2 Venezuela. Colombia rounded out the top-three with 68 points.

Nine of the 10 Americans medaled in the first day of Pan-Am competition, including six golds and the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
 

Carter Young of Bixby, Okla., was named the Outstanding Wrestler after going 4-0 en route to a gold-medal performance at 38 kg/83.5 lbs. All four of his wins came in the form of technical falls and the American did not surrender a single point the entire day. 

Our other medalists include Cougar Andersen 66 kg/145.2 lbs. earning a gold and Christian Forbes earned a silver medal at 35 kg/77 lbs.

Greco-Roman

Team USA’s Schoolboy Greco-Roman team capped off an excellent run for the United States at the Pan-American Championships with four Greco champions and another team title.

Team USA scored 80 points, edging out Venezuela (72) and Colombia (71).

"It was a tremendous effort by our schoolboys today, coming off a successful freestyle day on Friday,” coach Bob Empey said. “They represented the American way with tough, in your face attacks. What a great lifetime memory the guys put together in welcoming back the Schoolboy Pan American Championships."

The same 10 wrestlers from the men’s freestyle tournament represented the U.S. in the Greco-Roman tournament.

Two Oklahoman's returned after earning two medals, Christian Forbes of Tulsa, Okla., earned his second silver medal of the weekend, taking second in the Greco tournament at 35 kg/77 lbs. and Carter Young, who was the freestyle champ and Outstanding Wrestler, produced a runner-up finish at 38 kg/83.5 lbs. Cougar Andersen took fifth at 66 kg/145.2 lbs., respectively.
